Who’s Hotter? *NHL Girlfriends (and Wives)*

Being a professional hockey player certainly has its perks. Relatively lucrative salary and endorsement deals, along with often substantial signing bonuses, competitive on-ice battles, team camaraderie, and all of the glory that accompanies just being a professional athlete. One of the aspects of said glory must be the super human, heroic ability to get hot girls to agree to be your girlfriend.

NHL players have very hot girlfriends (and wives), as a general rule. Their ability to command the ice, skate effectively, and strategically work together in order to score goals translates seamlessly to regular life. Hockey players have the requisite strength, courage, and stamina to land the hottest girls. I’m sure not everyone in the world can agree that hockey is the greatest sport ever (although I believe it most certainly is), most everyone can agree that the following women are exceedingly hot.

One of my favorite games to play, particularly between hockey games (and sometimes during half time) is “Who’s Hotter? NHL Edition.” This deliciously lovely game encourages staring intently at two objective realities — the level of hotness of two NHL players’ girlfriends or wives — and comparing them. Making a decision is vital (i.e. you can’t simply say “they’re both hot”), and conclusions must be drawn and subsequently discussed. Let’s begin.

Emma Anderson — model, actress, singer, and winner of Sweden’s version of Survivor — is the lovely arm candy and fiance of the Detroit Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg. Long, dark hair, great beach body, and talent — this chick has it all.

Elisha Cuthbert — Canadian film and television actress — is girlfriend to the Maples Leaf’s captain, Dion Phaneuf — and she is blazingly attractive. Blond haired, blue eyed, petite, and in a word — delicious. Though Sean Avery of the Dallas Stars stirred up some drama by announcing Phaneuf had settled for his own “sloppy seconds” (referring to his previous relationship with Cuthbert), I would vehemently “settle” for his seconds any day.

The choice for me is easy — Elisha, please marry me?!! — but I tend to prefer blonds. Do you agree? Disagree? Comment during your next break from NHL 2012. (If only we could get girls like Elisha by being great at playing NHL 2012.)

The Boston Bruins

With EA Sports‘ relatively recent release of NHL 2012 and the 2011-2012 NHL season already well underway, I am loving life, drinking lots, eating some fantastic food (food that is probably horrendous for my health), playing video games online, and enjoying the company of great friends this Fall season.

Recent Bruins Newsworthy Happenings:

  • TONIGHT! Monday, October 1o, at TD Garden, the Bruins will host Colorado for the first and only time this season. (Anyone want to schedule a NHL 2012 game prior to the puck dropping?)
  • The Bruins traveled to Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium yesterday to present the Stanley Cup at the Pats-Jets game. Their 100-day supervision of the Cup ends (temporarily, that is — until 2012′s Stanley Cup finals) on October 22.
  • Bruins are officially 1-1 after their breezy win over the Bolts this past weekend. After their disappointing loss to the Flyers on October 6, I was pleased at the relative ease with which they overpowered the Bolts.
  • Prior to the October 6th opener at TD Garden, the Boston Bruins re-experienced the magic of the Stanley Cup final as they raised their championship banner to a crowd of screaming fans. Alumni alternate captain and winger Mark Recchi and defensemen Shane Hnidy participated in the celebration. The Stanley Cup itself was passed from team member to team member, held high to the sounds of raucous, seemingly unending cheers from the crowd. What a moment! I am proud to be a Boston Bruins fan.
  • Coach Claude Julien’s delivered some important remarks following the emotional banner raising and subsequent opening loss to the Flyers. This season will not be a repeat of last year, no matter what the outcome. Though the Stanley Cup victory was absolutely a stepping stone, every season is different and must be approached as a separate and completely unique entity. Though Julien remarked that his approach will not change, the team is different; it’s a different year and a new opportunity to grow and perform. I, for one, could not be more excited.

Any takers on scheduling an EA Sports NHL 2012 game this afternoon/evening before or after the Bruins play the Colorado Avalanche?

NHL 2012 Sets Sales Records

As of last week, EA Sports NHL 2012 has boasted the biggest opening sales numbers in the franchise’s history, with an estimated 450,000 games sold in North America and Europe. In U.S. dollars, that figure equates to approximately $27 million in sales.

While I love the game, particularly the Be a Pro Mode, I am also fascinated by the video game world and its obsession with purchasing the newest game in a series. NHL 2012 has been in stores for about two weeks now, and it’s sales figures are so impressive. So many EA Sports NHL fans out there are committed to the series, and they willingly and gladly purchase each of the games in the series.

The new game offers an unprecedented depth and complexity with the variety of modes and options. EA Sports has made lots of improvements with this newest game, and I love it. But what about the game has me completely hooked that I must run out and get the newest game each time the next in the series is unveiled?

  • The thrill of the unknown. While EA Sports released previews and known features updates, I did not know exactly how the newest in the series would play. And I had to find out. The unknown prompted me to pre-order the game and stand in line on the release date to pick it up.
  • The promise of improvements. All of the little annoyances, inconsistencies, and bugs in NHL 2011 prompted me to purchase NHL 2012. I wanted the most updated version — the one with the fixes, the best one available, the most improved.
  • The ability to play with everyone else. With online play so popular, I want to be able to play on par with everyone else playing NHL 2012. I want to be the best at that game. NHL 2011 is old news online now, and everyone prefers 2012. So must I.
  • The Boston Bruins are awesome. I love the Boston Bruins, and I must possess anything remotely related to pro hockey in general and the Boston Bruins in particular. Plus, the reason “the Boston Bruins are awesome” is my justification for really most any purchase right now.

I hope everyone is enjoying NHL 2012 as much as I am, and has justified their purchase with hundreds of hours of play already.

Are Girl Hockey Players Hot?

NHL 2012 — as we are all well aware — allows us to create female avatars. This recent development got me thinking. Are female hockey players hot? The short answer is yes, they are generally hot. Their individual level of hotness depends upon many factors, of course. Yet some commonalities exists to rank them among some of the hottest female athletic groups. Here are just a few of the contributing factors.

  • They fight. Female hockey players get into the game. They don’t mess around, and when another player crosses them, things get ugly. Fights ensue. And who doesn’t love a girl fight?
  • Girl hockey players are a mystery. Are they gay? Are they not gay? Their orientation is a mystery, and that question makes female hockey players hotter. I love a good mystery. Mysteries are there to be solved.
  • They swear. A little bad ass contributes to a girl’s hotness coefficient. A willingness to swear at another girl while playing a sport is quite an attractive quality.
  • They’re strong. Female hockey players are strong. They have strong arms, strong legs, and a whole lot of heart. You do the math.
  • They’ve got relatively good bodies. Yes, some female hockey players are thick. But again, they mostly have really good bodies. And, I’m willing to overlook a few missing teeth for a great butt.

Other Hot Female Athletic Groupings

  • Yoga Moms. We’ve all seen them walking around Starbucks at 10am with their three-wheeled strollers, blonde highlights, and black stretchy pants. And no doubt about it — they are very good looking.
  • Runners. Girl runners are disciplined. They eat well, and they can be found congregating in groups. What more can a guy ask for? Runner girls are a grand slam.
  • College Soccer Players. They’ve got great legs, great abs, and they sacrifice for the good of the team.
  • Tennis Hot Shots. Short skirts, coordinating outfits, and pink bows in their hair. Yum.

EA Sports NHL 2012: Our Official Review

Today’s post includes my own official review of EA Sports NHL 2012. The realities of hockey are gruesomely amazing — honor, violence, teamwork, blood, and lasting scars. I love hockey — I love watching it, playing it on the ice, and playing it off the ice (enter the only video games worth playing — the EA Sports Hockey Franchise).

Is NHL 2012 Better than NHL 2011?

This is really the only question worth asking about video games within the series — is the latest installment an improvement over the previous edition? And, was it actually worth it to create the latest installment? And, finally, was it worth the investment?

To all of these questions, I answer a general “yes.” Although, I must admit, NHL 2012 was not as much of an improvement as I had hoped. The critics seem to agree. According to the Official XBox Magazine’s review, the game implemented several improvements, but nothing that would be considered incredibly innovative, creative, or original.

One exceptional improvement that I’ve already experienced is the life-like graphic display of hockey as a blood-ridden, battle-oriented sport. Never before has EA Sports presented a hockey video game that represents this violent struggle in a realistic way. The game has gotten progressively smarter in its representations of hockey players and the ways in which their bodies react to this level of professional play on the ice.

The game’s amped up artificial intelligence makes it much more difficult to score, which as a seasoned EA Sports NHL fan, I appreciate. You have to really work to get a goal, and the creators’ grasp of physics is astounding.

NHL 2012, overall, is certainly an improvement, and I do enjoy playing it more than NHL 2011. It is absolutely the best hockey video game on the market, hands down, and in my opinion, the only video game worth playing. Is it vastly different or inventive in comparison to NHL 2011? No. But it is an improvement, nonetheless.

Drinking/NHL Games: Playing and Watching

Who doesn’t love playing drinking games while watching NHL? I have my favorites, and I am sure you probably have yours. These games we love were developed out of the probability of various events occurring during professional hockey games; they were created out of the very essence of NHL hockey. Treat them with respect, and please — select a designated driver prior to each game.

Drinking Games and Hockey Games

Drinking while watching hockey is, in a word, glorious. I highly recommend it. Why is drinking — and more importantly, playing drinking games — while watching the NHL so enjoyable? Because watching hockey and drinking share several common characteristics:

  1. Both are best when done in a group, and correspondingly not AS fun when done alone (but still worthwhile pursuits, to be sure).
  2. Both have clear winners and losers. During every hockey game, a winner emerges victorious (sometimes unexpected, sometimes not). During drinking events/games, etc., the winner is the one left standing, able to take his booze and remain intact throughout the night. The loser is the one who wakes up the next morning, unable to remember the events of the previous evening — the one who probably made a fool of himself, had to rely on his buddies for a ride, and who will never be welcome in his neighborhood bar again…until the next NHL game, that is.
  3. Drinking and hockey are both celebratory and distracting — perfect for celebrating wins and consoling losses.

Drinking Games

Here are some of my favorites:

  • Team Game. This game is perfect when you have several fans who like opposing teams. Rules: Take a drink/shot when your team gets scored on, the other team’s goalie makes a save, loses a face off, or receives a penalty.
  • Goalie Game. Rules: Take a drink/shot when the goalie jumps at a puck; take a drink when the goalie misses a puck; take two drinks when the goalie makes a save.
  • Puck It. Rules: Take a drink when the puck flies off the ice. Take a drink when a player gets hit by the puck. Take two drinks when the puck flies off the ice, into the crowd, and someone catches it.
  • The Others. (Geared toward hockey enthusiasts and pacifists alike.) Rules: Drink when someone’s beer/drink is featured on a commercial or mentioned in passing by a sold-out announcer. Drink when someone yells at the TV. Drink when fans boo a team — either team will do. Drink anytime someone asks: “What were the rules of this drinking game again?”

Enjoy the fun, and remember to drink responsibly.

Saying “Adios” to NHL 2011

NHL 2012 Features Trailer

Get ready people: NHL 2012 hits stores TOMORROW — Tuesday, September 13. Are you ready to go head to head and schedule games online?

The game is shaping up to be the best EA Sports NHL game yet. With many new features, I plan to lock myself up for a few days to figure everything out and decide for myself. Whenever a new game comes out, particularly a new EA Sports NHL game, I play obsessively for awhile until I get comfortable with it.

EA Sports — for the past few hours — has posted a live stream (USTREAM) to the game’s content, launch party, new features, and some live play action. I have really enjoyed watching it, as I am sure many of you have as well.

Recent News Regarding NHL 2012: The new game will now allow players the ability to create female avatars. With a growing female fan base for the sport hockey as well as the video, EA Sports has responded to the request of one female fan to include this functionality in the new game. Because of Title IX  and a growing global interest in hockey, many females around the world have begun to participate in ice hockey. Not wanting to neglect its many female fans, EA Sports decided to up the ante and allow for the creation of female avatars.

Here are some of the many reasons I’m excited about the EA Sports’ release of NHL 2012:

  • Winter Classic game feature — I am excited to play outdoors, and I’m so glad EA Sports decided to include this important part of the NHL tradition.
  • Dynamic goalies
  • More realistic puck physics
  • Integration of 2011/2012 current NHL statistics
  • Increased ease of use for online play
  • All interactive, dynamic elements improved
  • Players have the ability to create teams, collect legend cards, and catalog injuries

Let’s get our game on! Looking forward to setting in to a long week of exciting games!

Halo: Reach vs. Call of Duty: Black Ops

Everywhere I go, anytime I talk about video games, I find gamers expressing their opinions regarding two amazing games available for xBox 360 — Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops. The gaming world is completely divided. Though most gamers at the very least enjoy playing both Halo: Reach and Black Ops, there seems to be an almost hostile argument occurring between which one is actually better.

These types of friendly “feuds” often incite interest in these specific video games among less enthusiastic gamers. So much discussion takes place online and in person over which of these two games is actually better. The discussion/argument draws in less interested parties, increasing the games’ levels of popularity overall. Controversies usually generate interest, and often fail to convince one side or the other to change their mind about the issue at hand. In all likelihood, someone who believes Reach superior to Black Ops would never be convinced otherwise. In attempting to convince others, though, he or she will probably ignite an interest in the game among those surrounding/listening in to the debate.

Reach or Black Ops?

So, which game is actually better? Well, everyone has their own opinion on the subject of video games, and beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. Our unique perspectives on various games is what makes this online community fantastic. Very likely, Online Dougie members enjoy playing both games, and acknowledge the individual merits of each.

Call of Duty: Black Ops:

  • Serious gamers often express exclusive love for Black Ops because weapons may be acquired, kept, and utilized for the long term.
  • Who doesn’t love a good zombie storyline? Entering into a battle with zombies is certainly fun.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops is available on several gaming systems — xBox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii.

Halo: Reach:

  • Exceedingly high quality graphics.
  • Players start out at an even point. Weapons can not be acquired and kept. This makes for more interesting competitions between gamers, and it is typically more fun to play with a group of people.
  • Reach’s story line addresses the origins of the Halo series, making it exceptionally interesting for fans of the Halo series.

I enjoy playing both games, and while I acknowledge the craftsmanship of both, I see magnificent creativity as well as highly interesting game play in Halo: Reach. In your opinion, which one is better, and why?

Back-to-School and Gaming

Going back to school is completely filled with difficult tasks: shopping for school supplies and back-to-school clothes, and the most horrific of all — getting up early. All of these tasks represent a gamer’s worst nightmare. If the third week of August and the beginning of a new school year is equal to torture for a serious video gamer, then summer vacation represents the antithesis: glorious opportunity!

Coming to terms with the end of summer vacation and the beginning of a new school year takes time, and transitioning back to the old routine of early mornings, homework, and after school commitments is certainly a process. Summer is an epic season for video gaming enthusiasts. The absence of a routine allows for literally hundreds of hours of potential game play, despite probably interruptions such as forced entry into summer camp, family vacations, or inevitable chores.

Suggestions for the Transition Back into the School Year:

  • Continue gaming, either safely online or with friends. No matter what happens with school, homework, or after school activities, keep practicing. Continue scheduling games with people who challenge you to get better. In short, keep playing video games.
  • Seize the opportunity of being in school to find new people with whom to play video games. The new school year may offer new kids, and there is the chance that these new people may be just as into the same video games as you are.
  • Approach homework in one of two ways. Each day, you can either run home, finish your homework as quickly as possible, and then spend time playing video games. OR, you can come run home, play video games, and then procrastinate doing homework as long as you possibly can. Your approach will probably depend somewhat on the oversight/requirements of your parents or guardians.
  • Create a countdown to the next breaks from school. For example, Labor Day weekend is only a few days away. Then, Thanksgiving Break, followed by the glorious Winter Holiday! Two weeks of gaming bliss. You get the idea.

Good luck in your transition back to school. Do not let the school year deter you too much from the pursuit of playing competitive video games. At the same time, be sure not to neglect your studies too much. Life is most certainly best lived in a state of balance.

Most Frustrating Video Games of All Time

As is the case with many gamers across the globe, I can play video games for an inordinate amount of time. In fact, my obsession most certainly frustrates the people in my life. “What were you and the guys up to this weekend?” my [mostly female] friends will ask. “Um, well, we played video games,” I respond. “And…what else?” they say. “That’s what we did. We played video games.” Their faces contort in confusion. They fail to comprehend how a group of mostly intelligent young guys could spend hours on end engaged in epic battles, world championship games, Stanley Cup finals, etc. I understand, though. We spend hours on end playing video games because we love to overcome frustration.

If you have enjoyed video games for any length of time (I’ve been playing them since I got my first Nintendo Game Boy when I turned 8 years old), you have most assuredly experienced a sense of extreme frustration over the course of your game play. Frustration is at the crux of competition. We grow frustrated when we strive to overcome obstacles, seek retribution, and eventually emerge victorious. I practice video games, and I play video games online because I want to figure these games out. I want to learn their secrets, their tricks, and I want to win.

The most frustrating video games of all time were, no doubt, created to cause confusion and incite a sense of anger over the challenging level of play. In short, video games aren’t created to be easy to beat, unless we are talking about the little kiddy video games we played when we were wannabe gamers (enter all art-related games, virtual reality-type games, etc.).  Video games are created to be tough. So, I have compiled a list of what I have experienced to be the most frustrating video games of all time. (This list is by no means exhaustive. It is merely based upon my own personal experiences.)

  • Tetris. You may laugh, but I never actually got to the highest level of the Game Boy version of Tetris, even though I played for hours and hours on end. Tetris is a very frustrating spatial-relationship-type game in which the speed of the shapes becomes a very great obstacle.
  • Pac-Man. As soon as you think you’ve got a shot, you hear the “you’ve died” music, alerting you to the fact that you stink at Pac-Man, and it is the smug, annoying girl behind you’s turn.
  • EA Sports Games When I Play Against Someone Way Better Than Me. Yes, I am citing an experience rather than an actual, physical game. Because you can tweak the EA Sports series, when I play alone, it is a satisfying experience. But playing with someone who is way better than I am is infuriating.
  • Call of Duty: World at War. Complicated, daunting, exceptional, addicting, and by far one of the most frustrating video games I’ve ever experienced.

What are the most frustrating video games you’ve experienced over the course of your tenure as a gamer?
